Watchman Overview
The simple but effective Watchman Service keeps a constant eye on your site.
Just like a watchman we make the rounds and check on the site periodically and keys a report.
| | Watchman tests the domain(site) every 10 minutes |
| | If the site does not respond after 30 minutes an email is sent to the client. |
| | Watchman tests the site every 10 minutes and when the site is up the client receives an email that the site is again responding. |
| | Reports on the site activity can be accessed at online for periods beginning on the previous day to the beginning of the service. |
Watchman System Information
siteSentinal Services were developed to monitor our sites on the
Internet. The first and most important tool was the Watchman
Service. The tool proved so valuable we decided to offer the service
world wide. This service is outlined on the home page and in the
Overview Section.
We use pings to test sites rather than
URL requests for several reason.
| | Pings are faster. Five pings attempts take less time that a single URL request. |
| | Pings do not reqister on counters. Test requests are not confused with desired traffic. |
| | Pings minimize throughput for which the client could be charged. |
We limit the emails about the site being down to a single alert at 30 minutes unavailabllity. If we continued to send email alerts every 10 minutes and over
a weekend a client would get 288 emails(Watchman Service would look like a spam
generator). Another email is sent when the site begins to respond again. The client knows how long a site is down.
At midnight(Central US Time), the Watchman service uploads the days information to a website so clients can access the information online. If a site does not respond
for 30 minutes another email alert is sent. A client is remined that the problem exists.
